Shooting Disciplines

74 Pistol Club is an ISSF (International Shooting Sport Federation) club shooting the following matches on a regular basis.

10m Air Pistol

Air Pistol

Air pistol matches are shot every week at the Schuetzenklub Illawarra in Albion Park. The range opens at 6pm each Monday evening except on Public Holidays.

Air pistol matches are shot over a 10m distance at targets 17 x 17cm in size. Men participate in a 60 shot match and woman and juniors in a 40 shot match. All shots are made from an unsupported standing position with the pistol held in one hand only.  Air pistol is a precision shooting sport and participants shoot at their own tempo within the allowed time of 75 minutes for the 60 shot match or 50 minutes for the 40 shot match. Typically shots are awarded a score between 0 and 10 in club matches. In major competitions decimal scoring is used with scores ranging from 0 to 10.9 per shot.

25m Standard Pistol

Standard Pistol matches are shot once per month at the SISC, SHRSC or Hubertus Country Club. Matches start at 10:00am and are shot in conjunction with Centre Fire / Sport pistol scheduled on the same day.

The Standard Pistol match consists of 60 shots and is shot with .22LR calibre pistols. The match is divided into 5 shot series with different timings:-

  • 4 series at 150 seconds
  • 4 series at 20 second
  • 4 series at 10 second

Participants shoot at targets on a 25m range. Targets face away from the shooters at the start of each series then turn to face the shooting line for the duration of the series before turning away again.

Centre Fire / Sport Pistol matches are shot once per month at the SISC, SHRSC or Hubertus Country Club. Matches start at 9:00am and are shot in conjunction with Standard Pistol matches scheduled on the same day.

The rules for Centre Fire and Sport pistol are identical except for the caliber of pistol used. Sport Pistol matches are shot with .22LR caliber pistols while the Centre Fire match is shot using centre fire ammunition between 7.62 mm (.30”) and 9.65 mm (.38”) caliber. The centre fire match can be shot with automatic or revolver style pistols. The match consists of 60 shots fired over two 30 shot stages. Each stage is shot in series of 5 shots.

The first stage is the precision stage and consists of 6 series. Targets are placed 25m from the shooting line and are identical to those used in the Standard Pistol match. Participants are required to fire 5 shots at the target within 5 minutes.

The second stage is the dueling or rapid fire stage and also consists of 6 series. The targets for this stage are different from the precision series and contain values 5 through to 10 only. For each shot of the series the targets turn away from the shooters for a period of 7 seconds then turn to face shooters for 3 seconds. Shooters raise their arm and pistol from a 45 degree angle, take aim and fire one shot at the target each time it turns to face shooters.

Members are also able to shoot a range of other matches including:-

50m (Free) Pistol

50m Pistol is similar to the 10m Air Pistol match except that it is shot using single shot .22LR pistols over a distance of 50m. There are very few rules governing the type and configuration of pistol used for this event. This event was formerly known as Free Pistol due to the lack of rules.

Pistols used for these events can have extremely light trigger pulls - often less than 50g. A match consists of 60 shots. When using paper targets that match is shot in 6 series of 10 shots each. Each 10 shot series is to be completed in 15 minutes. On Electronic Scoring Targets the match is shot as a single series over a period of 90 minutes.  50m Pistol is an Olympic Event.

25m Rapid Fire

The Rapid Fire match is shot with 22LR pistols. That match consists of 60 shots that are shot in 12 series of 5 shots each. Two shooters compete at the same time but not necessariliy agaianst each other. In this match targets turn away from the shooter for a period of seven (7) seconds.  Shooters must start the series with their arm holding the pistol lowered at 45° and can only raise their arm and take aim once the targets have begun to turn toward the shooters. The shooter is required to place one shot on each of the five (5) targets within a short period of time.

For the first two series the targets face the shooter for eight (8) seconds, for the next two series the targets face the shooter for six (6) seconds, and for the following two series the targets face the shooter for four (4) seconds only. At this point the two shooters swap sides and repeat the 8, 6, and 4 second series again. Rapid Fire Pistol is an Olympic Event.
